LOOKING for the right lipstick shade to suit your personality and skin tone can be tricky, costly and annoying — especially after years of nude gloss.
Just because you like the look of a shade on your pal, or even someone like Rihanna — who can pull off every colour in the book — it does not mean that shade will suit you,
unfortunately.
Here are a few tips to help you match up with your perfect shade.
LIGHT SKIN
If you have pale skin, then pick a light shade. For day-to-day wear, light pink will
complement your skin the best. But for an evening look, pick a medium red shade that has a tangy tint.
The brighter the red, the paler you will look — unless that is the look you’re going for — I suggest a tomato red and MAC do some
brilliant versions, as do Elizabeth Arden. For pinks, look no further than Clarins and GOSH. This, worn with a black defined eye, will have you looking sexy but elegant all night long.
Avoid dark colours as such — browns,
burgundys and plums. The only way shades like these will work is if you complement them with simple eye make-up — neutral shadow with a touch of mascara. This will give you a ‘pop’ effect and won’t leave you looking somewhat ‘grungy’.
MEDIUM SKIN
Medium skin has a lot more shades to choose from as the sallowness and yellow tint of the skin can pull off more vibrant colours. Berry shades such as pink, red and even browny nudes work very well and can be worn both day and night. Estee Lauder have great berry shades, as do Armani and Chanel.
If you were to choose a red, select a bright cranberry red, try Yves Saint Laurent and Rimmel. The only thing I would avoid is the ‘creamy concealer’ lip, it’s such a waste!
DARK SKIN
With dark skin, light shades are a no-no — well, unless you are Nicki Minaj — but darker shades do look best. Light golden brown glossy shades are perfect for during the day. Shades like this really complement the skin. For an evening shade, choose deep colours like a burgundy red or be daring and go for an intense plum shade!
Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Dior are the names to go for here, never afraid of the stronger colours.
